Why the RTP of one slot differs between casinos and how to check the version of the game

The RTP of a slot can differ from casino to casino when the provider has released several tested mathematical versions of the same game and the sites connected different variants. An identical name, the same graphics and the same bonus feature do not yet prove an identical percentage.

You have to check the RTP inside the launched game: open Help, Info, Paytable or Game Rules before you bet and save the screen showing the percentage, the provider's name and the casino address. Do not take the figure from a review or a lobby tile alone.

Important: the theoretical RTP shows the long-term calculated share of returns across a huge volume of bets. Volatility describes the spread and the character of the payouts. What RTP means in plain words

RTP stands for Return to Player, the theoretical percentage returned to players. If the rules state an RTP of 96%, the mathematical model is designed so that across a very large volume of play it returns around 96% of the turnover as prizes. The remaining 4% is called the theoretical house edge.

That does not mean 96 units come back to a specific person from every 100 units staked. Turnover includes bets placed again with funds already won. The same bankroll can pass through the game several times.

An example of the long-term maths:

• total turnover of all bets: 10,000 units;
• theoretical RTP: 96%;
• calculated aggregate return over a large volume: 9,600 units;
• theoretical difference: 400 units.

Over a short run the result can be much higher or much lower. The formula does not predict the next spin.

Theoretical RTP, actual RTP and your own session

These three figures answer different questions.

The UK Gambling Commission gives an example: a game with a theoretical RTP of 91.68% can temporarily show 90.42% on actual data. Such a deviation has to be assessed together with the volume of play and the volatility. One measurement or one bad session does not prove a malfunction.

A player usually does not see the aggregated actual RTP. What is available for checking is the published theoretical figure of the specific version.

Volatility is not another word for RTP

Volatility describes the spread of results around the average. In a high-volatility slot large prizes can appear less often and swings in the balance are usually more noticeable. Low volatility is more often linked to frequent but small returns. The exact behaviour depends on the maths of the game.

Two slots can both have an RTP of 96% and still feel completely different:

• game A returns a small part of the stake more often;
• game B goes longer without a noticeable result but contains rare large events;
• their long-term calculated percentage is the same;
• the risk of a short session and the distribution of prizes differ.

Why the same game can have several RTPs

A provider can prepare several mathematical configurations of one title. They keep the theme and the main features but use different probability or payout tables. Every version in use has to meet the requirements of its market and pass the prescribed testing.

The difference can also be affected by:

Can a casino change the RTP while you play

• the lobby shows one percentage and the in-game rules another;
• the figure changed without notice;
• the rules do not explain the RTP of a particular feature;
• the provider and the game ID are hidden;
• the round history does not match the result displayed;
• support claims the RTP depends on your personal balance or streak.

Ask them to name the exact version, the theoretical RTP of the base game, the separate RTP of the chosen mode and the date of the last update. Save the ticket number.

How to read “slots with a high RTP” without fooling yourself

A higher theoretical RTP means a smaller calculated margin over a large volume, all else being equal. The difference between 96% and 94%, for example, is 2 percentage points. On a turnover of 10,000 units the long-term calculated difference is 200 units.

But “all else being equal” is the key condition. A session can end long before the statistics converge, the volatility can be high and a single large prize can make up a significant part of the model. A bonus buy can also carry its own figure.

Do not increase the number of spins in an attempt to “wait for the RTP”. The percentage is not a debt the game owes to a particular person. Earlier results do not force the next spin to make up for losses.
