What a wagering requirement is: how to read bonus terms before activation

A wagering requirement shows what total volume of bets you have to place before bonus funds, or the result tied to them, become available for withdrawal. The line x20 with no base stated explains nothing. x20 of the bonus and x20 of the deposit plus bonus produce different turnover. Before activating, check the formula, the game contribution, the maximum bet, the deadline, the conversion cap and the consequences of opting out of the promotion.

A bonus is not free money and it does not reduce the mathematical risk of the game. The larger the required turnover, the longer your money stays tied to the terms of the promotion. If the rules cannot be restated as a single formula, the offer cannot yet be assessed with open eyes.

Wagering in plain words

The UK Gambling Commission glossary defines wagering requirements as a requirement to place bets totalling a certain amount before funds become available for withdrawal. The requirement can be expressed as a fixed sum or as a multiplier of the deposit or the bonus.

That definition is handy for reading any set of terms, but the legal consequences depend on the licence and the GEO. The rule of one regulator cannot be transferred automatically to another operator.

The basic formula:

required turnover = wagering base × multiplier

Where the base can be:

  • the bonus only;
  • the deposit;
  • the deposit plus the bonus;
  • the winnings from free spins;
  • another amount expressly stated in the promotion.

Why x20 can mean different amounts

Suppose the deposit is 100 conventional units and the bonus is also 100.

WordingCalculationRequired turnover
x20 of the bonus100 × 202,000 c.u.
x20 of the deposit and the bonus(100 + 100) × 204,000 c.u.
x20 of free spins winnings, if they equal 3030 × 20600 c.u.

This is an arithmetical example, not a promise of a result. Real bets come with a probability of losses. Even a completed turnover does not mean the initial amount will still be there.

If the rules simply say x20, look for the words bonus amount, deposit, deposit + bonus, free spins winnings or a separate formula. Do not guess the base yourself.

Seven conditions that matter more than the size of the bonus

ConditionQuestion before activationRisk if you skip it
BaseWhat amount is xN calculated from?The turnover turns out higher than expected
Game contributionWhat share of a bet counts?Progress will be slower
Max betWhat is the maximum per spin or round?A bet can breach the terms
DeadlineWhen does it start and end?The bonus can expire
Restricted gamesWhich games are excluded?Bets will not count or will breach the rules
Conversion capHow much can move to the available balance?The visible balance is not the withdrawable amount
CancellationWhat is removed if you opt out?You can lose the bonus result

Game contribution changes the real pace

An operator can count bets in different games unequally. If a slot has a 100% contribution, a bet of 10 c.u. reduces the remaining wagering by 10 c.u. With a 20% contribution the same bet reduces it by only 2 c.u. With a 0% contribution it does not advance the wagering at all.

Check not only the game category but the specific title. Sometimes the general contribution table has a separate list of exclusions. Save the list on the day of activation, because the link or the make-up of the catalogue can change.

Do not pick a game just to speed up progress. Contribution only shows what part of a bet counts towards the terms of the promotion, not how good the game is for the player.

Maximum Bet: one bet can change a dispute

Max bet limits the size of a bet while a bonus is active. The limit can apply to a spin, a round, a hand, a bonus buy feature or the total of linked actions.

Before playing, clarify:

  • the currency of the limit;
  • whether it applies to extra features;
  • whether the interface blocks an excess;
  • how a bet is rounded in another currency;
  • what happens on a single breach;
  • where to view the bet history.

Do not rely on an automatic block in the interface. If the condition is in the contract, save it and keep your bet under control yourself.

Deadlines: separate clocks for activation and wagering

A promotion can have several deadlines:

  1. When you have to register.
  2. When to make the qualifying deposit.
  3. When to activate the bonus.
  4. When to complete the wagering.
  5. When to request a withdrawal or conversion.

Write down the date, the exact time and the time zone. The wording “three days” can be counted from issue, from activation or from the first round. If meeting the terms pushes you to raise the frequency or the size of your bets beyond your budget, it is better to decline the bonus.

Winnings cap and conversion cap

Maximum cashout, maximum winnings and conversion cap can describe different limits. The visible game balance is not always equal to the amount available for withdrawal.

Compare three figures:

  • the current balance in the interface;
  • the amount that can become a real balance once the terms are met;
  • the amount you are allowed to request for withdrawal.

Example: free spins produced 200 c.u., but the rules expressly cap the conversion at 50 c.u. Then the economic sense of the offer has to be judged by 50 c.u. and not by the number shown on the screen for a while. This applies only if that is exactly what the specific rules say.

Your own funds and bonus funds must be kept apart

In its official guidance for the British market, the CMA states that a player must understand where their deposit is and where the restricted bonus funds are. For operators under a different licence, check the local rules and the contract.

Before activation, ask support five questions:

  1. Which balance is spent first?
  2. Can I withdraw what is left of my own deposit?
  3. What happens to the bonus and the result tied to it on a withdrawal?
  4. Can I opt out of the promotion before the first bet?
  5. Where does the interface show the remaining required turnover?

Get the answer in writing. A chat screenshot with no date and no case number is weaker than a full letter or a case history.

An important UKGC rule in 2026

According to the official statement of the UK Gambling Commission, from 19 January 2026 LCCP 5.1.1 bars operators licensed by that regulator from applying a wagering requirement above x10 to bonus funds. The terms must be clear, transparent, fair and accessible.

This is not a global cap. It applies to licences covered by the UKGC LCCP. If a site shows x30, first establish which regulator and which law apply. You cannot conclude that the UKGC has been breached if the operator does not hold that licence.

How to read bonus terms in five minutes

Minute 1: find the full page

Open not the banner but the Terms and Conditions of the specific promotion and the general Bonus Terms. Check the version date and the GEO.

Minute 2: write out the formula

Note the base, the multiplier and the resulting turnover on one line.

Minute 3: find the game restrictions

Open the contribution table, the list of exclusions and the max bet.

Minute 4: check the exit

Find the deadline, the conversion cap, the maximum withdrawal and the consequences of cancellation.

Minute 5: save the evidence

Make a PDF or screenshots with the URL, the date, the name of the promotion and the key clauses.

A bonus card to keep

Copy this template:

  • Name of the promotion:
  • Date and GEO:
  • Operator licence:
  • Size of the bonus:
  • Wagering base:
  • Multiplier:
  • Required turnover:
  • Contribution of the chosen game:
  • Max bet:
  • Deadline and time zone:
  • Conversion or withdrawal cap:
  • What happens on cancellation:
  • URL of the rules:

If half the fields stay empty, do not activate the offer until you have a written explanation.

When it is better to decline a bonus

  • the wagering base is not named;
  • the rules are not available before a deposit;
  • the max bet or the game contribution cannot be found;
  • the deadline forces you to play faster than planned;
  • the conversion cap makes the offer pointless;
  • cancellation can touch your own funds, but the procedure is not explained;
  • support answers only in general phrases;
  • the terms and the banner contradict each other.

Declining a bonus is a normal choice. There is no need to increase your deposit or your playing time to satisfy someone else's marketing condition.

If the rules changed after activation

Compare the saved version with the current one. Record:

  • the URL and date of both versions;
  • the name of the promotion;
  • the clause that changed;
  • the time of activation;
  • the history of balances and bets;
  • the correspondence with support.

Ask the operator to state in writing which version was applied and why. Then use the internal complaints procedure and the route provided for by the specific licence. Do not accuse the operator from memory alone: attach both versions of the text.

How IPU.bet helps

The IPU.bet rules recommend reading the terms and the wagering requirement before activation, using your own details and saving receipts, transaction history and correspondence.

IPU.bet does not set a partner's bonus rules and does not guarantee that a bonus will be credited, converted or paid out. Player Support can help structure the promotion card, the timeline and the claim. This is informational and organisational help, not legal representation and not a guarantee of the outcome.

Do not send support a password, a CVV, a one-time code or a seed phrase. Pass on only the necessary materials through the official channel.

What to remember

A wagering requirement with no base is an incomplete condition. First find out what the multiplier is calculated from, then check the game contribution, the max bet, the deadline, the conversion cap and cancellation. Only after that does comparing the size of the bonus make sense.

A bonus does not make the game risk-free. If the terms put pressure on your pace or your budget, or get in the way of stopping freely, decline the offer.

Before activating, save the bonus card and check it against the IPU.bet rules. If a dispute about the terms has arisen, gather both versions of the rules and contact Player Support at ipu.bet.

FAQ

What does a x20 wagering requirement mean?

You have to place bets equal to the base multiplied by 20. The base can be the bonus, the deposit plus bonus or another amount. You need to find it in the rules.

Does every bet count in full?

Not always. An operator can set a different contribution per game. A bet of 10 c.u. with a 20% contribution reduces the remaining turnover by only 2 c.u.

Can I withdraw my own deposit while a bonus is active?

That depends on the terms and the applicable law. Before activating, check the order in which balances are used and the consequences of opting out of the promotion.

What is max bet?

It is the maximum bet allowed while a bonus is active. Clarify whether the limit applies to a spin, a round and any extra features.

Does the x10 wagering cap apply everywhere?

No. It is the current rule for licences covered by the UKGC LCCP. For other licences you need to check the local rules and the specific terms.

Does IPU.bet guarantee that a bonus dispute will be resolved?

No. IPU.bet can help organise the evidence and the case, but it does not set the partner's rules and does not guarantee the outcome.
