How to read online casino terms before you deposit: 12 points you must not skip

The «Deposit» button is usually more visible than the link to the casino's terms. Yet it is the Terms and Conditions that state how long a withdrawal may take, when the operator will request documents and for which breach it may void bonus winnings.

Checking the rules after a payout is delayed is too late. Open them before your first deposit and find the 12 conditions that directly affect your money and your rights as a player. If the wording is unclear, ask support and save the answer. If there is no answer, or it contradicts the document, it's better to postpone the deposit.

Neither a licence nor a high rating removes the risk of playing. But clear terms let you see the restrictions in advance and decline conditions that don't suit you.

1. Who runs the casino and which domain the licence covers

Start with the legal entity, not the bonus. The footer of the site or the Terms and Conditions section should state the company name, the registered address and, where applicable, the licence number.

Look for the phrases operated by, licensed by, registered office. Then compare that data against the entry on the regulator's website. It isn't only the brand and logo that must match, but the company, the domain and the permit number.

One brand may run different domains for different countries. A familiar logo doesn't yet mean the address you opened is covered by the licence.

Check:

  • the exact spelling of the domain;
  • the presence of a secure connection;
  • the company named in the licence;
  • the territory the permit covers;
  • the link to the regulator's register.

Don't settle for a licence image in the footer. Open the entry at the regulator and find the relevant domain in it. If the domain isn't there, treat the check as unfinished.

Red flag: the terms give only the casino's commercial name, with no legal entity and no way to contact it with a formal complaint.

2. Does the casino accept players from your country

The Restricted Countries, Territories or Eligibility sections show who the operator allows to register and play. Availability of the site is not the only thing to check.

The site may open from your country while the terms forbid registration, the bonus or certain payment methods for that GEO. In a dispute the operator will refer to the text of the terms, not to the fact that the registration form technically worked.

Ask support four things: whether you may register, deposit, receive a bonus and withdraw money from your country. Save the answer together with the date.

3. What data is required at registration

Look at the Account, Registration, Eligibility and One Account Policy sections. The operator normally requires a real name, date of birth, address, phone number and email.

The data in your profile must match your documents and the owner of the payment method. Someone else's card, someone else's crypto wallet, a made-up address or a second account can trigger a review and lead to restrictions on transactions.

Before registering, find out:

  • whether only one account is allowed;
  • whether the name and country can be changed after the profile is created;
  • what happens if there is a mistake in the form;
  • whether several players from one address or device are permitted.

4. When and how KYC takes place

Look for the words Verification, KYC, Identity Check, Source of Funds. The terms should make clear which documents may be requested and at which stage.

The standard set often includes an identity document, proof of address and proof of the payment method. During an additional review, information about the source of funds may be requested. The exact set depends on the operator, the licence, the amount and the risk of the transaction.

Check before depositing:

  • whether your document is accepted;
  • which language it must be in;
  • how recent the proof of address must be;
  • how files are submitted;
  • how long the check usually takes;
  • whether redundant data is removed from document copies.

Don't send documents to a random messenger or to an address that isn't listed on the official site.

5. Which methods you can deposit and withdraw with

In the Payments, Deposits and Withdrawals sections, look for the rule about returning funds to the original payment method. Because of AML requirements, the operator may first return funds by the same method the deposit was made with.

Check:

  • whether the payment method must belong to the account holder;
  • whether withdrawals to a card, wallet or crypto address are available;
  • whether another withdrawal method can be used;
  • which account currency applies and whether there is conversion;
  • who pays the fee.

The phrase «we accept deposits» doesn't mean withdrawals are available by the same method. Close that question before you top up.

6. Which limits and timeframes apply to withdrawals

Find Minimum Withdrawal, Maximum Withdrawal, Pending Period, Processing Time and Fees. Write the figures down separately.

The operator's processing time and the crediting time at the bank or payment service are different stages. For example, the casino may review a request for up to 48 hours while the payment provider takes several more business days to move the transfer.

Pay particular attention to:

  • the minimum amount of a single request;
  • the daily, weekly and monthly limit;
  • separate limits for large wins;
  • weekends and public holidays;
  • the withdrawal fee;
  • the right to cancel a request while it is pending.

If the timeframe is described as reasonable time or as soon as possible with no clear range, ask support to state the current standard in writing.

7. Can you withdraw your own deposit without wagering it

Don't mix your own money with the bonus balance. In some jurisdictions regulators explicitly require them to be separated and prohibit forcing a player to wager their own deposit before withdrawing. But the rules depend on the licence and the market.

Look for what happens when an unused deposit is withdrawn:

  • whether a fee is withheld;
  • whether an active bonus is cancelled;
  • whether an additional check is needed;
  • whether there are limits on the number of requests.

If the operator requires you to turn over your own deposit several times, check whether such a condition is lawful for its licence and your GEO.

8. How the bonus and wagering work

A bonus should have its own document. Look for Wagering Requirements, Turnover, Bonus Balance, Expiry.

Example: a bonus of 100 c.u. with x30 wagering requires bets of 3,000 c.u. if the multiplier applies to the bonus only. If the formula includes deposit plus bonus, the volume will be different. Don't guess the calculation base — find it in the text.

Check:

  • which amount the multiplier applies to;
  • how many days are given for wagering;
  • which games take part;
  • what percentage of a bet counts;
  • what happens to your own funds if the bonus is cancelled.

A bonus only makes sense once you understand its full cost and restrictions before activation.

9. What maximum bet is allowed with a bonus

The Maximum Bet clause often sits not next to the bonus amount but inside the detailed terms. Exceeding the limit even in a single round can become grounds for reviewing bonus winnings.

Say the maximum bet is 5 c.u. If a player accidentally bets 6 c.u. while a bonus is active, the operator may consider the condition breached. The interface doesn't always block such a bet automatically.

Write the maximum bet down before you play. Check separately whether the limit applies to one spin, one hand, one round or the sum of several actions.

10. Which games, strategies and actions are prohibited

The Restricted Games, Bonus Abuse, Irregular Play and Prohibited Activities sections list the actions the operator treats as a breach.

You need to check:

  • games that don't count towards wagering;
  • games with reduced contribution;
  • betting on opposite outcomes;
  • abrupt changes in bet size;
  • use of several accounts;
  • joint play or transfer of an account;
  • bots, scripts and exploiting a technical error.

The wording «the operator may confiscate funds at its own discretion» is too broad. Clear terms should describe specific breaches and their consequences.

11. When an account can be restricted or closed

Find the Account Suspension, Account Closure, Dormant Account and Termination sections. They should explain on what grounds the operator may halt transactions, close a profile or treat an account as dormant.

Check:

  • whether the player receives a notice and the reason for the decision;
  • whether the remaining balance can be withdrawn after closure;
  • whether an inactivity fee applies;
  • after what period an account is deemed dormant;
  • what happens to a pending withdrawal request;
  • how to contest a restriction.

Look separately for information on the protection of client funds if the operator becomes insolvent. The level of protection depends on the licence and the casino's legal model.

12. How to file a complaint and where to escalate a dispute

Before depositing, find Complaints Procedure, Dispute Resolution or ADR. The document should set out the channel for submitting a claim, the response time and the next level of review.

Save:

  • the support address;
  • the address for a formal complaint;
  • the response deadline;
  • the name of the regulator;
  • the details of the independent dispute resolution body, if one is provided for;
  • the rules on retaining game and transaction history.

If the operator doesn't explain how to file a complaint, that is a serious shortcoming. In a dispute, ordinary support chat may not be enough.

  2. The payment and withdrawal rules.
  3. The bonus page.
  4. Support's answer about your GEO.

FAQ

Do I have to read all of an online casino's terms?

The full document is useful, but before depositing you should at minimum check the company, the licence, GEO, KYC, payments, withdrawals, bonus restrictions and the complaints procedure.

How do I check a casino licence?

Find the licence number and the legal entity in the terms, then open the regulator's official register. Compare the company, the number and the exact domain.

Can a casino request documents at withdrawal?

Yes. KYC and AML conditions depend on the operator and the licence. It's better to find out in advance which documents are accepted and at which stage they are requested.

What matters more in a bonus: the percentage or the wagering?

The size of a bonus can't be judged on its own. Wagering, the maximum bet, the deadline, game contribution and the winnings cap can matter far more than the advertised percentage.

Why save the terms before depositing?

Terms can be updated. A saved version helps show which rules were in force at the moment of registration, deposit and bonus activation.

Does the IPU.bet rating guarantee there will be no disputes?

No. Any play carries risk, and the deposit and withdrawal relationship is between the player and the operator. The rating helps with the initial shortlist, and IPU.bet support can help work through a dispute.
